The Police Suicide Prevention Center: Who We Are

The Police Suicide Prevention Center is an organization primarily comprised of current or former officers who volunteer their time to prevent law enforcement officers throughout the world from taking their own lives. As a division of the National Institute of Ethics, it is a nonprofit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization. The Center is administered through the Institute, and managed by a board of respected international advisors. We encourage suggestions, criticisms, or other useful comments. The Center, and the National Institute of Ethics, are private and independent, and not affiliated with any law enforcement or governmental agency.

The Center provides its services without cost to individuals and agencies, and the Center does not solicit or accept financial contributions from individual police officers, or from officers' family members or friends. The members of the board which manages the Center receive no salary for their work on the board.

More officers commit suicide each year than die at the hands of criminals. It is law enforcement's ugly, dark secret that we have never acknowledged, even to ourselves. It is both ironic and repulsive that of all the technological and professional advancements law enforcement has achieved during the last few decades, the primary cause for officers dying was, and continues to be, ignored as if it didn't exist.

Although the police profession should hold itself responsible for not addressing such a critical situation, it is much more important to marshal our resources, combine our abilities, and move forward to implement effective solutions. The Center's website provides a multifaceted prevention approach, consisting of sections for those considering suicide, people who know someone who is contemplating suicide, resources to contact for specific assistance, and other valuable information.

Those within the Center believe that the most effective approach for preventing officer suicide is to obtain the commitment of officers throughout the world to stay alert for signs that a fellow officer may be considering suicide, and to effectively train officers in what they can do to intervene before he or she can do so.
